Background of the Study
In response to the challenges posed by Nigeria's over-reliance on oil revenues, Muhammadu Buhari’s administration implemented the economic diversification policy aimed at promoting other sectors, particularly agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Birnin Kebbi, the capital of Kebbi State, is a key area for agricultural production, especially rice, and was one of the focal points for implementing the diversification strategy. The administration’s efforts to boost agricultural productivity, create job opportunities, and reduce dependence on oil are key aspects of this policy.
Buhari’s economic diversification strategy has included several initiatives, such as the Anchor Borrowers Program, aimed at boosting agricultural output and encouraging smallholder farmers. It will examine agricultural development, job creation, and economic growth as outcomes of diversification efforts. The study will be limited to the period of Buhari’s administration and will not include policies or developments that occurred after his tenure.
